This is an old Japanese practice that is becoming increasingly popular outside Japan and is now gaining popularity among architects around the world. Burnt wood is a modern, ancient Japanese timber cladding material that provides a striking and long-lasting expressive façade. The process creates a layer of carbon on the outside of the boards that protects the wood inside and is said to make the wood virtually maintenance free. It is also noted that it can make the boards more resistant to fire, rot and pests, with a life expectancy of over 80 years. This method is used to prepare cypress, larch and other types of wood traditionally used.
